Super Rugby 2020: Crusaders confirm home stadium for Super Rugby Aotearoa

The Crusaders have confirmed OrangeTheory Stadium as their home ground for their Super Rugby Aotearoa campaign.

When the revamped competition was announced last week, the Christchurch-based franchise was still working through the financials of hosting their four home games.

OrangeTheory Stadium joins Hamilton’s FMG Stadium (Chiefs), Wellington’s Sky Stadium (Hurricanes) and Dunedin’s Forsyth Barr Stadium (Highlanders) as venues for the 2020 campaign.

The Blues have yet to lock in their regular base at Auckland’s Eden Park.

The Crusaders haven’t lost a game at the ground since 2016 and coach Scott Robertson is predictably pleased any uncertainty has now been dispelled.

Super Rugby Aotearoa will see the five NZ-based Super Rugby clubs play one another, home and away, over 10 weeks, with two matches every weekend.

The Crusaders have a bye in round one and will play their first game against the Hurricanes on Sunday, June 21 in Wellington.

The side’s first home fixture is against the Chiefs on Sunday, June 28.

Rebels to face Sharks in full-scale rugby clash at Mars Stadium

Melbourne Rebels will face the South African-based Sharks in a full-scale Super Rugby encounter in Ballarat next year.

This will be the first Super Rugby match played for premiership points in the city.

Rebels vs Sharks

The round four fixture at Mars Stadium on Saturday, February 22, is also the first home game the Rebels have played away from AAMI Park.

Rebels rugby general manager Nick Ryan said it was a significant step to shift a home match and “really exciting” for the club.

He said despite the magnitude of the call, it had been an easy decision to take a game to Ballarat based on the way the city had opened its arms to the Rebels.

Melbourne has had two pre-season camps in Ballarat and played a warm-up game against Queensland Reds at Mars Stadium early this year in the lead up to the Super Rugby season.

The Melbourne Rebels have today revealed that Albury will play host to a preseason trial against the Brumbies on January 23.

Both clubs will be bringing their full squads to Albury, with back to back games planned to allow coaches to cast their eyes over their entire squads.

The occasion will have a festival feel to it, kicking off when the Albury Steamers Rugby Club host both teams and supporters for dinner on the Wednesday evening.

The Albury Steamers will also run a Level 1 Coaching Course for all their coaches, from Albury and the surrounding regions.

The matches have been organised in conjunction with Albury City Council who have liaised with the two Super Rugby teams to bring the game to the region.

Melbourne Rebels GM of Rugby & Pathways Nick Ryan said the Club was excited to be taking their final preseason fixture to Albury.

“We’ve previously taken squads to Albury for trials and always been blown away by how welcoming the Albury public have been,” said Ryan.

“The fact that we can spend a couple of days here and connect with the community makes it a fun experience for the playing squad and reflects our drive to take more games to regional areas.
